Educating and
Empowering Women in Liberia
Search for Common Ground (sponsor), August 2004
Liberia has been devastated by years of civil war. In the few places
where education is available, the priority for families is on educating
boys. This education fund will supplement the costs for females
seeking to finish their schooling and pursue post-secondary education
opportunities, preparing them to contribute to rebuilding Liberia.
This project will support womens efforts to improve their
skills and further their education by supplementing their tuition
costs. Recipients will pursue courses that prepare them to play
a role in the economic, social, and political development of Liberia.
Women's participation is critical to a peaceful future for Liberia.
Women must have access to education in order to advocate for their
needs and influence decisions in their country. They currently require
$11,000 to carry out this project; to learn more and/or contribute
to their cause, please click

Talking Drum Studio Liberia, St Joseph's Complex Bushrod Island,
Monrovia, Liberia. Tel: 231-226-440.

Women
in Democracy
International
Foundation For Election Systems, February, 2004
The International Foundation for Election Systems provides professional
advice and technical assistance in promoting democracy and serves
as an information clearinghouse on elections, rule of law, governance,
and civil society. An important aspect of the IFES project in Liberia
concerns voter/civic education and civil society strengthening relative
to the upcoming elections. IFES is developing voter education materials
and distributing those materials to Liberian citizens on the details
of the electoral process; focusing on the mechanics of Liberia's
first elections since the war. Work in this area provides the following
three services: (1) assist in the provision of voter education to
special target populations: women, former combatants, and first-time
voters; (2) support Liberian civil society in preparing and performing
non-partisan monitoring of the pre-election, election, and post-election
periods; and (3) support knowledgeable international groups in their
efforts to conduct non-partisan monitoring of the election process.
The credibility and sustainability of Liberia's democratic transition
will be determined largely by civil society's participation in the
electoral process.

Emergency Aid Package for War-Torn
Liberia
October, 2003
Liberia Watch, a non-partisan coalition of U.S. groups and individuals,
as well as non-governmental organizations, Africare and Bread of
the World, appeals to Americans across the country to contact Congress
in support of a $200 million emergency aid package for war-torn
Liberia. The fragile peace that has been established in Liberia,
under the leadership of West African leaders, can only succeed if
resources are mobilized to provide humanitarian assistance, disarmament
and reconstruction. The group has generated more than 50 letters
to President Bush and members of Congress urging recognition of
Liberias urgent situation. They urge everyone to contact their
Senators to support the emergency aid package to Liberia.
