CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: UN-INSTRAW: Virtual Discussion

United Nations International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (UN-INSTRAW) is pleased to announce the launching of a three-week virtual dialogue “Reintegrating Female Ex-Combatants: Good practices and lessons learned in the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration of women and girl” to strengthen the analysis and replication of good practices and to foster the dynamic exchange of experiences and information between academics, government representatives, United Nations, INGO and civil society staff with expertise, working experience or a general interest in the area of gender and disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR). The dialogue will take place from June 28-July 19, 2010.

UN-INSTRAW will facilitate discussion to identify the specific needs of women and girls in reintegration processes and to discuss effective measures that address these needs. While the discussion will focus on reintegration within DDR specifically, participants are encouraged to address demobilization and disarmament as applicable.

Themes

The dialogue will be divided into three thematic weeks:

Week 1: Specific needs analysis of women and girls in reintegration
Roles & Needs: What are the specific needs of women and girls that must to be addressed in reintegration processes? What are the different roles women and girls assume during armed conflict and its aftermath and how do these affect their status in reintegration?

Week 2: Good practices and lessons learned in gender and reintegration
Measures: How have adopted measures addressed or failed to address the specific needs of women and girls in reintegration processes?
Participation: If applicable, how has the increased participation of women in programme planning supported or failed to support gender-aware reintegration?
Gender Roles: How do reintegration processes consider or fail to consider the particular gender roles (traditional and transformed) of women and girls before, during and post-conflict?

Week 3: Measuring impacts & recommendations
Policy/Programme/Measures: Drawing on the discussions during the first two weeks, what are policy and programme planning recommendations to address the needs of women and girls in reintegration processes? What measures should be taken to implement these recommendations?
Monitor & Evaluation of measures and indicators: What measures should be taken to monitor and evaluate gender-aware reintegration? With reference to the Global Indicators Report (S/10/173), what types of data and indicators are available or feasible for monitoring and evaluating gender-aware reintegration?
