The Prime Minister and Head of Government, Philemon Yang has received in audience, the new Central African Regional Director of the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), Diana L. Ofwona.

She was in Cameroon to update the government of Cameroon on the recent mutations within the organisation.

Diana L. Ofwona said United Nations Development Fund for Women was merged with three other UN System structures that work on women and gender issues to form “UN Women”.

The new structure which was created by a resolution of the UN General Assembly of 2nd July 2010 is expected take off effectively in January 2011.

At the end of the audience, Diana Ofwona indicated to the press that the encounter was also organised to seek new ways of cooperation with the new structure.

She said “We have invited Cameroon to join us share experiences with the Great Lakes Region on initiatives that have been taking place here on trans-border trade”.

Diana Ofwona was in Cameroon in continuation of a tour of the nine countries of the Central African Region.

She took up office as the Regional Director of UNIFEM for Central Africa on 3rd May, 2010.

During the tour she held discussions not only with government officials but other development partners and members of civil society organizations.

The new UN-Women was created to better synergise different efforts carried out to empower women.
