Dozens of Lebanese women dance in front of the home of the country's parliament speaker, Nabih Berri, to send a clear message of urgency to pass a law that looks to protect women from domestic violence.
Berri's home was the chosen destination because in a 2009 parliament session he was the one who called for the implementation of laws to protect women from domestic abuse, honor killing and an amendment to discriminatory laws against women.
Out of the 128 members of parliament in Lebanon, only 43 gave their support to a law to shield women from both violence and abuse.
“The law to protect women from domestic violence is no less important than an election law which is what the Lebanese parliament is currently discussing,” Zuwiya Rohana, a head of an NGO, said.
Another lady taking part in the dance demonstration said “it is a shame the current government full of men oppose such law.
It is not acceptable that in the twenty first century women are still treated as second class citizens with no rights or dignity.”
Female foreign domestic workers have also joined in as there is no law giving them any protection either.
