Public Launch Party - No Women, No Peace Campaign

Thursday, October 14, 2010 - 20:00
PeaceWomen Consolidated Themes:
General Women, Peace and Security

All around the world women are prime targets in conflict. Rape, displacement, torture and kidnapping, are just some of the issues women face in conflict, yet their voices are left almost entirely unheard during formal peace-building processes. Ten years ago, the UK supported the extraordinary Resolution 1325 on women, peace and security which recognises the devastating impact of conflict on women, and the need for them to be involved in peace-building from the earliest stages. However, a decade later and unbelievably change is still not being felt by the women who need it most.

At the 10-year anniversary of this important UN resolution, the No women, no peace campaign will be launched to make the case that you can't build peace leaving half the people out. The UK is a key player on the world stage and was influential in ensuring women, peace and security was placed on the global agenda, but whilst the government supports the resolution on paper, it is yet to back this up with adequate assertive action.

No Women, No Peace is calling for a minister and high-level task force to actively advance government action on women, peace and security, as well as clearly allocated funding and greater accountability, because it just doesn't make sense to leave half the people out of the peace-building process. Throughout the next year No women, no peace. will campaign on these four measures and needs as many supporters as possible to really get this message across.

Join us for an informal drinks reception and take the first No women, no peace campaign actions. The night will feature an exhibition of artwork from the No women, no peace creative competition and some inspiring speakers, including Kat Banyard, director of UK Feminista, and other UK and Afghan women's rights activists. There will also be comedy from finalists of the 2010 Funny Women Awards!

All welcome. Entrance is free and there is no need to book. For more information contact nowomennopeace@gaps-uk.org 020 7922 7776
