Guinea-Bissau has a population estimated at 1.6 million (UN, 2009) with an area of 36,125 sq km (13,948 sq miles). The capital is Bissau. The main languages are Portuguese, Crioulo, and African languages.

The country experienced a civil war in the late 1990s in which thousands were killed, wounded and displaced. The Country's most recent coup was in 2003.

In 2012 development, peace and security gains suffered a large setback after a coup on April 12 carried out by military leaders who detained Prime Minister and presidential candidate Carols Gomes Jr (known as Cadogo) and interim President Raimundo Pereira.  The country remains in a state of uncertainty with military leaders having appointed failed presidential candidate Manuel Serifo Nhamajo as president of a proposed two-year transitional government deemed by ECOWAS to be 'illegal' (UN, 2012).
