Solomon Islands
The Solomon Islands have a population estimated at 523,000 (UN, 2009) with an area of 27,556 sq km (10,639 sq miles). The capital is Honiara. The major languages are English (official) and Melanesian dialects. The Solomon Islands is striving to recover from a civil conflict that brought it to the brink of collapse.
More than 90% of the islanders are ethnic Melanesians, but there has been intense and bitter rivalry between the Isatabus on Guadalcanal, the largest island, and migrant Malaitans from the neighbouring island.

SOLOMON ISLANDS: Water Shortage Hits Pacific Women
The Solomon Islands, a developing island nation in the south-west Pacific Islands, has one of the highest urbanisation rates in the region, and the basic service infrastructure is struggling to cater for the influx of people from the provinces to the capital, Honiara. Thirty-five percent of the city's population, who live in informal settlements, are facing the health consequences of a dire shortage of clean water and sanitation.

A report released last month by the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat titled “Pacific Regional MDG's Tracking Report” revealed the country had not made substantial improvements in most aspects of the goals.

OCEANIA: Pacific Nations Women Promised a Better Deal
Leaders of 15 Pacific Island nations have pledged to remove barriers to women's economic empowerment, end violence against women and pave the way for their increased political representation, at the conclusion of the 43rd Pacific Islands Forum in Rarotonga in the Cook Islands, last week. The meeting was also attended by the Executive Director of UN Women, Michelle Bachelet.
