Overview

Belgium has developed a Nation Action Plan for the implementation of UNSCR 1325 for the period 2009-2012.

The NAP was developed by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Cooperation, Defence, Interior and Justice, Institute for Gender Equality (for Minister of Equal Opportunities) and coordinated by UN Department within the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. The Commission on Women and Development, an official advisory body to the Belgian Minister for Development Cooperation composed of NGOs, academics and women’s organizations, was invited to comment and provide input into drafts of the NAP at various stages of its development.

Belgium has no recent experience of conflict, but is a key contributor to UN peacekeeping missions, NATO forces, development aid and humanitarian assistance. Although Belgium has largely interpreted the NAP in an international way and references relevant regional and international treaties and resolutions within UN and EU frameworks, unlike many non-conflict affected, developed nations, Belgium has also situated its NAP within its domestic context.

The stated Aim of the NAP is:

"To achieve a better gender equality in its policy and in the implementation of its policy, both nationally and internationally […] with a specific emphasis on the fight against sexual violence”
