When women are insecure or threatened and have limited freedom of movement they cannot participate in peace and democracy work on the same conditions as men. Women's lack of security is in itself a threat to peace. The report discusses the connection between security, progress and women's rights. There are still very few women at peace talks and in politics in conflict-affected countries. Women's isolation and fear of threats, violence, and discrimination is strengthened by the fact that their freedom of movement and other rights are often restricted in the name of security. They are locked up in order to protect them from kidnapping, violence and abuse. The lack of security for women is basically about a lack of respect for women's rights.
