The Irish Congress of Trade Unions has written to the Colombian embassy requesting that the Colombian government provide urgent protection to recently-released political prisoner Liliany Obando. The letter also requests that the government act to end false accusations against her. The letter from David Begg, the General Secretary of the ICTU, says “your government claims to be improving human rights. If this is so, at the very least the state must provide the requested protection measures...” it also underlines that the ICTU has “grave concerns” for Liliany Obando’s safety.
Liliany Obando has recently been victim of being photographed by unidentified men, as well as being followed to and from meetings by other unidentified people.
Last week Women’s TUC conference also passed an emergency motion put forward by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists (CSP) that sent a solidarity message to Ms Obando, and called on the TUC to press for the Colombian authorities to safeguard her. The motion also called on reinforcing JFC’s campaigning efforts, continuing TUC’s opposition to the Colombia-EU free trade agreement as well as continuing to work for peace and social justice in Colombia.
