Violence against women occurs in epidemic proportions in the U.S .and abroad. The Gender-based Violence and Genocide Symposium explores violence against women locally and globally. The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place on Saturday, Feb. 12 from 10 am to 2:30 pm at William Mitchell.

Presenters include:

* William Mitchell Professor Sarah Deer, who contributed to the 2007 Amnesty International Maze of Injustice Report, which led to the recently passed Tribal Law and Order Act that has been described as an important step to help the Federal Government better address the unique public safety challenges that confront women living in tribal communities
* Suzanne Koepplinger, executive director of the Minnesota Indian Women's Resource Center, who will speak about sex trafficking in Minnesota's American Indian community
* Christine Stark, a survivor of sexual violence and trafficking, who will present research on prostituted indigenous women
* Erin Morgan, a clinical consultant with the Center for Victims of Torture, and Dr. Ellen J. Kennedy, executive director of World Without Genocide at William Mitchell, who will address violence against women in the Congo and Ivory Coast.
