The following text is from Nobel Women's Initiative
We are very excited to invite you to join us online from January 22 – 31 as the Nobel Women's Initiative – in partnership with Just Associates and human rights organizations in the region – travels to meet with women human rights defenders (defensoras) in Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala!
Follow along with us on Facebook, Twitter, and our blog as we meet with extraordinary women who are on the front lines of defending human rights in the region. We aim to spotlight their work and amplify their calls for an end to the unpunished killing of women that is so prevalent in the region.
The United Nations recently named Honduras the most violent place on earth, and Mexico has the dubious distinction of being home to five of the world's ten most deadly cities. A recent change of government in Guatemala has women's rights activists worried about the potential for a rollback in women's rights in the country. In all three countries women are targets for sexual violence.
Nobel Peace Laureates Jody Williams (USA) and Rigoberta Menchú Tum (Guatemala) will lead a delegation of over twenty women on a fact-finding mission to learn from women first-hand about the violence they are experiencing—including why sexual violence is used as a tool to silence women's human rights defenders—and the strategies women on the ground are using to end violence in their communities.
The delegation is comprised of highly-respected women journalists, filmmakers, performing artists, businesswomen, indigenous activists and human rights advocates from the US and Canada. They will focus on the unique circumstances of women.
The Nobel Women will share what we learn with decision-makers in the region, as well as Canada and the United States. Our goal is to to support real change, grounded in experiences and perspectives of women, by ensuring that what we learn is communicated directly to those making decisions that shape women's lives in the region.
JOIN US VIRTUALLY!
