Gender trainers and women's rights advocates have been urged to hold each other accountable in the work they do.

The regional director of United Nations Women, Elizabeth Cox, made the comment at a Fiji Women's Crisis Centre gender training of trainers workshop on Monday.

Ms Cox told 30 participants from Fiji, Tonga, Kiribati, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Nauru that there was a need for people who could go out to the public with proper gender and human rights training.

She said there was a need for a cadre of trainers in the Pacific who have had the right gender training and who fully understand what they are talking about.

"As in some cases there are gender trainers who haven't really learnt what gender equality is all about," she said.

The two week's training is aimed at reinforcing the participants' understanding of how gender relations are constructed, the importance of power differences in gender relations and as it exists within the Pacific cultural and religious context.

At the end of the training the participants are expected to strengthen their skills to critically analyse documents including policies, budgets, projects, media reports and current trends from a gender perspective among others.

The training has been funded by AusAID.
