The official spokesman for the 13th congress of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) stated Tuesday the assembly members have agreed to allocate 10% quota to female members for the leadership of the party.
The six-day event is in progress in Erbil, the Kurdistan Region's capital and lasts until Thursday evening. The news went public at a press conference. Barzan Mala Khalid told the reporters the quota is fixed and if some female members can grant the leadership positions through voting, their election will not cut from the predetermined share.
Thus from the 1,350 elected members to the congress, through secret ballot and also the quota system, some 60 will be elected for the leadership board.
Massoud Barzani, the Kurdistan Region's President, was elected Tuesday by majority as the KDP president. He assigned his nephew, the former Kurdish premier, Nechirvan Barzani, as his vice.
The KDP was founded in 1946 by Mustafa Barzani and since his death in 1979 his son, Massoud Barzani has led the party. The party counts as one of the most influential players in the Region.
