Ahead of municipal elections in the spring, a group of activists in Saudi Arabia have launched a campaign to allow women to run, as well as vote.
The campaign, dubbed My Country, kicked off Sunday with letters sent to various government officials and posts on social networking Web sites.
The strict Muslim country held its first municipal elections in 2005, but women were not allowed to vote. It was recently reported that women would be allowed to vote in the next round this April, but campaigners say females can contribute to government as well.
The elections were meant to be held in 2007, but the Saudi government postponed them due to fears over a possible Islamist gain in the voting and to decide over the sensitive issue of female participation.
It is unclear whether this latest move by campaigners may force a further postponement.
