As women continue to fight for their rights, the violence against women and girls still continue unabated. Many stakeholders including the United Nations and Governments have been working on modalities to ensure that the rights of the girl child and that of women are put in place. In recent years, the rights of children and women have been violated sexually, by men who have gone scot free in Sierra Leone.
A week ago, an 80 year old man, Pa Abubakarr Kabia of Marampa Village, Lunsar in the Port Loko District allegedly was accused of having impregnated an eleven year old school pupil of the Roman Catholic Primary School Marampa who is now unable to take her end-of-year exams because of the ugly situation she has found herself.
The parents disclosed that the daughter first complained of having cold and as they intended to take her to the hospital for treatment only for an old woman to opine that the girl seems to be pregnant. According to them, as they threatened the girl as to how she lost her virginity and became pregnant, she named the 80year old man who is also a resident of the village. Police sources say the old man used money to lure the girl into having sex with him.
Awareness Times spoke to the Deputy Chairperson of the Port Loko District, Council, Councilor Neneh Turay who disclosed that it was not just the 80 year old man but another male suspect by the name of Mohamed Kanu was being accused of having had sex with the 11 years old girl. She explained that she was currently the one taking care of the pregnant girl as the parents of the innocent child are currently perturbed with the unfortunate situation.
