WOMEN in the Soloman Islands yesterday launched what is called the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 – Women Peace and Security Policy Initiative.

This resolution, amongst others, calls for peace and security for women in all areas of life.
Acting Minister for Foreign Affairs Seth Gukuna launched the document. Various women leaders spoke at the event.

The event coincides with the 16 days of activism campaign on Violence Against Women, which the Ministry of Women, Youth and Children Affairs has taken a leading role.
Pionie Boso, gender officer of the ministry, said yesterday's event is a highlight of the campaign to promote gender equality and human rights for women and children. Ms Boso called on the nation to make peace a reality and enhance security for women in the country.

Minister Gukuna, in launching the initiative, calls for greater partnership and relationship between stakeholders. He said the Government strongly believes in peace and security for women because they are fundamental rights.

The United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 is an affirmation of the important role women have in conflict prevention and peace building.

It aims at increasing the participation of women in conflict management at all levels, including the prevention and post conflict reconstruction. The policy initiative is designed for peace in the Pacific region.
