Police Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri has commended female officers taking part in United Nations missions across the world.

Eight officers, one of them female, will soon leave for a peacekeeping mission in Sudan.

Seven others recently successfully completed their missions in Liberia and East Timor.

The eight officers will spend a year in Sudan as the Zimbabwe Republic Police continues to get United Nations recognition for its professionalism.
Speaking at a send-off ceremony at Police General Headquarters in Harare on Tuesday, Comm-Gen Chihuri said: "By taking up these extremely challenging assignments, they (female officers) are asserting and confirming their undoubted ability, capability and professionalism in international policing."
He applauded returning officers for standing up to the daunting challenges they faced in Liberia and East Timor.

Comm-Gen Chihuri said he had no doubt that those bound for Sudan would take a cue from the indelible legacy and splendid record of performance left behind by their returning colleagues. "I am confident, therefore, that the Sudan-bound contingent will be able to confidently navigate the rifts and contours of their assignment with professional modesty, zeal and excellence that have been our hallmark in all international policing endeavours."
Comm-Gen Chihuri said the officers should continue defending Zimbabwe irrespective of the odds stacked against them.

He said Government's indigenisation programme should be viewed seriously by all Zimbabweans, mindful of the dictates of the liberation struggle and sovereignty.

"There is the indigenisation programme going on. Just like with the land reform programme, some were sleeping and now they want land. Just like this indigenisation process, you need to open your eyes."
