Report of the Secretary-General on MONUSCO S/2012/65 (Jan 2012)

Report of the Secretary-General on MONUSCO S/2012/65 (26 January 2012): This report was submitted pursuant to S/RES/1991 where the SC requested that the SG report on the progress on the ground. This report covers events dating from the last report issued 24 October 2011 to 9 January 2012.

• The report details progress on the ground, including significant events of the electoral process and the support of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO).

• The Secretary-General expresses concern over recent violence and urges DRC authorities to respect human rights, stressing the importance of a strong judiciary with regards to sexual and gender based violence.

• The report details that Ntabo Natberi Cheka was added to the Security Council Committee’s travel ban and assets freeze list.

• In the report’s attention to sexual and gender based violence issues, including service provision and personnel training, minimal data on sexual and gender based violence during the reporting period or on programs aimed at prevention is included.

• In regards to the recent elections and the ongoing political process in the DRC, the report does not include attention to women peace and security issues or gender concerns.

• Women peace and security issues feature primarily in regard to sexual and gender based violence.
