Report of Secretary-General on UNMIT S/2012/43 (January 2012)

Report of the Secretary-General on the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste S/2012/43, 18 January 2012: Covers major developments in Timor-Leste and the implementation of the Mission’s mandate between 20 September 2011 and 6 January 2012.

• The Secretary – General’s report covers the transition process, election preparations, and further institutional strengthening.

• There are myriad references to women as part of the peace and political process within the report.

• OP 7 details meetings that the UN Special Representative held with women political party representatives and representatives of civil society.

• OP 21 discusses the training of the PNTL police in areas of human rights, gender awareness, and domestic violence law by UNMIT police. Of the 1,524 police trainees, 273 of were women. • The report highlights UNMIT’s continued high prioritization of the zero-tolerance policy on sexual exploitation and abuse, including through the provision of conduct and discipline training and sexual exploitation and abuse awareness programmes in its four regional offices.

• The report includes discussion of numerous programs and initiatives enacted to strengthen the enforcement of the Law against Domestic Violence.

• OP 47 details the efforts to address maternal health issues in the country by both doctors and the government.

• In OP 63, the Secretary-General stresses the importance that adequate resources are allocated to vital areas including agriculture, health and nutrition, education and employment-generation, particularly for youth and women.
