On the diplomatic front the Korean ambassador to the United Nations was named president of the forty-one-nation governing body for UN Women.
The election of Kim Sook as the head of the U-N Women Executive Board was formally recognized at a regular session of the UN group in New York.
UN Women, short for the U-N Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, was established in 2011 after combining four different UN divisions that dealt with women's and gender issues.
The group is led by former Chilean president Michelle Bachelet, who personally welcomed Kim as the president of the board.
The foreign ministry said South Korea donated close to five million U.S. dollars to this group last year.
