Gender Mainstreaming In Peacekeeping Operations Liberia 2003 – 2009: Best Practices Report

This Best Practices Report reviews a variety of experiences from the viewpoint of different stakeholders involved in or affected by UNMIL peace keeping operations. This is characterized by a number of diverse programmatic findings which emerged as best practices. The study highlights six thematic areas: DDR, Police, advocacy and policy, SGBV, elections and female peacekeepers and assesses the impact of gender in these specific areas.

The Office of the Gender Adviser (OGA) commissioned in 2009, the documentation of best practices for gender mainstreaming in the Peacekeeping Mission in Liberia that have proven to promote women's rights and gender equality, covering the period, 2003-2009. The United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL), was established in 2003-- following a 14-year civil war in the country (1989-2003) under Security Council Resolution 1509 (2003) which incorporates Resolution 1325 stressing the “importance of a gender perspective and women's participation in peacekeeping operations and post conflict peacebuilding”.
