The Security Council met on 11 December 2013 to recieve a briefing from the ICC Prosecutor on Sudan-Darfur and hear a statement from the representative of Sudan(S/PV.7080).
Issues of women, peace and security were referenced solely in regards to women’s protection concerns, particularly in the context of violence against civilians, acts of organized sexual and gender-based violence, and continued impunity for these crimes. The permanent representative of Togo explicitly mentioned violence perpetrated against human rights defenders as well.
Failure to reference women’s participation and empowerment concerns resonated as the most significant missed opportunity, as this meeting remained devoid of women’s agency in conflict resolution and prevention process.
