The significant advancement of the UN's reform agenda this year in an area that is clearly at priority of our times, gender equality and women's empowerment, is a matter of satisfaction to our delegation, particularly given the pro active role played by India in the negotiations. I wish to reiterate our strong commitment for UN Women and its strengthening.
We welcome the unanimous adoption of the resolution on System-wide Coherence by the General Assembly earlier in July, which among others has established UN Women. The creation of UN Women effectively consolidates all the existing mandates and functions relating to women and constitutes an important step in fulfilling the commitments undertaken in the Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing.
The Bahamas welcome efforts by this Organization to continue to bring focus to women's issues. We applaud in this regard, the adoption of resolution 64/289 which approved the establishment of a new gender entity- “UN Women”.
A major development in the evolution of the United Nations this year is the creation of the UN Women. As a firm believer in gender equality and women's empowerment, my government will do all in its power to support this entity. We wish the new board well and urge them to accord apolitical center stage to gender issues and policies.
The government of Zambia recognizes the important role that women play in the attainment of development. Furthermore, we recognize that the empowerment of women and their inclusion in the decision making process has enhanced their role in development. It is for this reason, that Zambia has integrated women in all sectors of society in decision-making positions. We are committed to doing even more.
Mozambique is proud of the progress made by the General Assembly on system-wide coherence. We commend, in particular, the General Assembly for the major step recently undertaken, with the establishment of UN Women. I seize this opportunity to reiterate our congratulations to Her Excellency Mrs.
I warmly welcome the establishment of UN Women. Ireland is committed to supporting this important new body within the UN system, as it promotes greater gender equality and works to enhance the rights and well-being on women worldwide.
In the issue of UN System-wide Coherence, the General Assembly in July established a new gender entity, “UN Women”. This body will further strengthen UN's capacity and effectiveness in advancing the status of women universally. Solomon Islands looks forward to cooperating with the new entity.
I wish to announce that Trinidad and Tobago will introduce in the First Committee of the General Assembly devoted to disarmament, internal peace and security, a resolution on "women, disarmament, arms control and non proliferation.
