General Women, Peace and Security

The General Women, Peace and Security theme focuses on information related to UN Security Council Resolutions 1325, 1820, 1888, 1889, 1960, 2106, and 2122, which make up the Women Peace and Security Agenda.

The Women, Peace and Security Agenda historically recognizes that women and gender are relevant to international peace and security. The Agenda is based on four pillars: 1) participation, 2) protection, 3) conflict prevention, and 4) relief and recovery.

The Women, Peace and Security Agenda demands action to strengthen women’s participation, protection and rights in conflict prevention through post-conflict reconstruction processes. It is binding on all UN Member States.

Commission on the Status of Women - CSW 56

The 56th CSW sees WILPF host three events, two of which will take place the 29th of February, namely “Achieving Human Security for Rural Women in Africa” and “Empowering Rural Women in eradicating poverty and hunger—how can we really help". A third event discussing “Food Security, Conflict, Peace and Rural Women” will be held on the 1st of March.

Free Screening of the Women, War and Peace Documentary 'PEACE UNVEILED'

Join No Women, No Peace. on 1 February 2012 in London for the UK premiere screening of Peace Unveiled, part of the Women, War and Peace documentary series, first aired on PBS in late 2011.

Peace Unveiled is an excellent documentary that follows Afghan women as they seek to be included in peace talks in late 2009 and early 2010. This will be the first UK public screening of the documentary. Watch the promo here.

Join a dynamic group of experts from Equality Now, the Center for Women's Global Leadership, UN Women, and Resolve Network, moderated by NYU Professor Barbara Borst, as they recap this revolutionary year and discuss how political and economic empowerment has a direct and positive impact on health, women rights, and preventing violence against women.

Event: XII Latin American and Caribbean Feminist Meeting

More than one thousand of women of different characteristics in age, ethnic group, sexual tendency, national origin, social and political position, will meet in the XII Latin America and Caribbean Feminist Meeting that comes back to Colombia after 30 years, and will be held between November 23 and 26, 2011 in Bogotá city.

Side Events – Open Debate: Women's Participation and Role in Conflict Prevention and Mediation

The Nigerian Presidency of the Security Council will convene on 28 October 2011 an open debate on women and peace and security with a specific focus on “Women's Participation and Role in Conflict Prevention and Mediation” to provide a forum for the Security Council, Member States and other stakeholders to review progress made in responding to these and related priorities.

Peace Unveiled

Afifa Azim, founder of the Afghan Women's Network; Nilofar Sakhi, former OSF Afghanistan director; and Orzala Ashraf, a women's rights activist will discuss the film and the current role of women in the peace process in Afghanistan . UN Women Assistant Secretary-General and Deputy Executive Director for Intergovernmental Support and Strategic Partnerships Lakshmi Puri will deliver opening remarks to the film.

Taking Women Beyond 1325

Women can, should and do play a crucial role in reducing violent conflicts around the world. However, the coverage on women in the media often reinforces the image of women as the victims of war.

UNSCR 1325: Moving beyond Theory

The conference UNSCR 1325: Moving beyond theory to maximize security in the OSCE, will bring together local and international experts to discuss challenges and good practices in the implementation of the resolution.
