UNITED ARAB EMIRATES: Women Busy Exercising Their Rights, Not Claiming Them

Her Highness Shaikha Fatima Bint Mubarak, Supreme Chairperson of the Family Development Foundation and Chairperson of the General Women's Union says she is happy that the UAE's women are no longer just claiming their rights, but also exercising them.

In an interview with Zahrat Al Khaleej magazine, Shaikha Fatima said the UAE's women have come a long way since the establishment of the Federation.

AFGHANISTAN: Rape in Afghanistan a Profound Problem

Rape in Afghanistan is under-reported, concealed and a human rights problem of "profound proportions", the United Nations said on Monday.

Norah Niland, the United Nations' human rights representative in Afghanistan, said field research conducted late last year and early this year found rape affected all parts of Afghanistan, across all communities and social groups.

Iran's 'Mourning Mothers' Must Be Released

Amnesty International has urged the Iranian authorities to release a group of women who were beaten and arrested during a peaceful vigil in Tehran at the weekend.

The 33 women, members of a group known as the 'Mourning Mothers', were seized during their weekly meeting in Laleh Park, Tehran on Saturday, according to media reports. Several of the women were beaten and 10 were taken to hospital.
