Voices from Syria
This side event creates a forum for member state and civil society stakeholders to learn more about women's experiences in the Syrian conflict and recommendations for transition, accountability and peace. The representatives of Syria civil society will speak about what can be done to realize the objectives of resolution 2122 (2013) and the wider Women Peace Security agenda in the Syrian context.
The Asia-Pacific Mediation Forum (APMF) is a not-for-profit regional association of individuals, organisations and institutions interested in promoting peace through mediation and other conflict transformation processes wherever conflicts threaten the well-being of individuals, organisations, communities and local, state or national governments in the region.
The implementation of the UN's Women, Peace and Security agenda on the ground is in many respects lagging far behind its ambitious conceptual framework. Case in point is the situation of women in Afghanistan which remains highly insecure, and many fear, will only become more difficult with the coming international military drawdown in 2014.
Because Our Cause is Just is an eye-opening documentary about the struggle of women in countries experiencing the so-called “Arab Spring.” Begun as a civil movement of women and men seeking human rights and justice after decades of dictatorship, the revolutionary wave has not yielded justice for all.

In the Middle East and North Africa the extraordinary political events since February 2011 have on the one hand opened new opportunities, but on the other hand also created new threats to women's human rights and their participation in political process.
Every year since 2002, we have gathered at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to recognize women who are social entrepreneurs, political representatives, businesswomen, human rights defenders and civil society advocates.
