Engagement: Disarmament

WILPF advocates for full and complete disarmament as the basis for peace, freedom and gender justice for all. There are many disarmament forums at the United Nations. These include the General Assembly’s First Committee, the United Nations Disarmament Commission, the United Nations Programme of Action on Small Arms and Light Weapons, Arms Trade Treaty, Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Conference on Disarmament, and other forums.

WILPF regularly engages in advocacy, monitoring and evaluation of these discussions through our Disarmament Programme, Reaching Critical Will (RCW). Reaching Critical Will works for disarmament and arms control of many different weapon systems, the reduction of global military spending and militarism, and the investigation of gendered aspects of the impact of weapons and of disarmament processes.

In 2017, RCW organised the women-led march and rally
called the Women's March to Ban the Bomb in preparation
for the meetings of the nuclear ban treaty. International Campaign
for Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN)
, in which RCW is a
steering committee, won the Nobel Peace Prize for its work
to banish nuclear weapons.
