Razan Zaitouneh, a 34-year-old human rights lawyer from Syria, established SHRIL in 2005, the same year she co-founded the Human Rights Association in Syria (HRAS). Since Bashar al-Assad's regime imposed a ban on access for foreign journalists and human rights advocates, SHRIL has become one of the main sources of information abroad on the atrocities committed by army and police forces. After a statement on Syrian state television on March 23, 2011 aired accusing her of being a foreign agent, it became clear that Razan would soon be arrested. Since she refused to flee and leave her country, she remains in hiding to this day.
