Since its inception in 1965, UNITAR has served as and information and training centre for UN Member States in the fields of environment; peace, security and diplomacy; and governance. Aiming to further develop the capacities of Member States, UNITAR conducts research and training programmes.

With an overarching aim to further develop the capacities of Member States UNITAR has conducted research and training programmes targeting women as participants in diplomacy and women as recipients to international law and social, economic, and environmental policy. Guided by SCR 1325, the institute also targets security personnel as part of its Peacekeeping Training Programme for the prevention of sexual violence and, sexual exploitation and abuse.
