The United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) was established in 1963 in an effort to identify hindrances to development that are “social” in nature, looking beyond traditional economic explanations. UNRISD functions as an independent agency based in Geneva that conducts research in collaboration with civil society and academics to develop strategies which are then sent as recommendations to implementing bodies including intergovernmental organizations and national governments.
