UNV United Nations Volunteers

UN Entity Layer:
Programmes and Funds

The UNV contributes to peace and sustainable human development through volunteerism worldwide. The programme mobilizes 7,500 qualified and experienced women and men of nearly 160 nationalities each year, serving as UN Volunteers in 130 countries. Their work includes technical cooperation with governments and community-based initiatives, in humanitarian relief and rehabilitation programmes, and in support of human rights, electoral and peace- building processes.

Gender is included as one of UNV's 25 thematic areas of international work, which includes programmatic work in legal, labor, social, and economic fields. UNV also reports broadly on issues and initiatives pertaining to gender and women, peace and security.

Much of UNV's gender mainstreaming work takes inspiration from the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. Pursuant to the Beijing +5 Special Session at the UN, UNV developed Gender Specialist positions and partnership with UNDP's Gender Focal Points in order to assist 18 UN country teams to follow up on their Beijing commitments towards gender-mainstreaming.
