The twin resolutions on Sustaining Peace highlight the important role of women in peacebuilding and the “substantial link between women’s full and meaningful involvement in efforts to prevent, resolve and rebuild from conflict and those efforts’ effectiveness and long term sustainability”. In 2016 the UN Peacebuilding Commission adopted for the first time a gender strategy which is now being implemented. In his report on the implementation of the twin resolutions on Sustaining Peace, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres highlighted that research “points to the direct relationship between gender equality on the one hand and resilience to and prevention of conflict on the other”.

On 25 April 2018, Bangladesh, Canada, Colombia, Germany and Switzerland co-hosted a High-Level Side-Event on Gender and Sustaining Peace in the framework of the UN High-Level Meeting on Peacebuilding and Sustaining Peace. The event explored how the involvement of women contributes to a higher effectiveness of efforts to sustain peace at all levels.
