The Peacebuilding & Development Institute in Sri Lanka (www.pdisl.org) is an international training, capacity building and research Institute in South Asia.

The internationally recognized but regionally focused professional training programme in Sri Lanka brings together practitioners and policy makers from the development and peacebuilding sectors across South and Southeast Asia to share experiences, reflect on their practice and develop new approaches for working in and on conflict in their countries. Our approach to training is as a means to acquire and develop practical skills relevant to peacebuilding and development.

Integrating Gender, Conflict and Development


11 – 15 October 2010

This course explores with participants the need to ensure that programming, planning and monitoring of development programes in conflict contexts is gender sensitive.

By the end of the course participants will have:
- a comprehensive understanding of how gender relates to conflict, peace building and development
- awareness of specific tools such as Resolution 1325 and how they link into and can be applied to security and development
- be able to apply gender analysis as a tool to understand conflict contexts and use these skills to inform the design, implementation and monitoring of peace building
programmes

Mental Health and Psychosocial Support in Conflict


17– 23 October 2010

This seven-day training programme, based in Eastern Batticaloa, targets South Asia-based MHPSS practitioners with a minimum of 2 years field experience,
and combines classroom-based training, case study work, and field visit
component in Eastern Sri Lanka. The course will be led by Ananda
Galappatti and Maleeka Salih and is run in collaboration with The Good
Practice Group, Sri Lanka.

By the end of the course participants will have:
- generated and shared knowledge across country, disciplinary and implementation contexts in South Asia
- developed new knowledge and experience through sharing, questioning, exploring and debating ‘what works in practice' so that participants are equipped with a
working knowledge of diverse approaches and best practices in the MHPSS
sector.
- developed knowledge on and practical approaches to current challenges, constraints and questions.

The course material will be drawn from both South Asian and global resources, with participants' own work experiences and course fieldwork being central to the learning approach
taken. The participants will be required to prepare for the course by
communicating needs and experiences and gathering data relevant to MHPSS in
their experience and country prior to the course.

Conflict Sensitive Economic Recovery


20 – 27 November 2010

Through this course participants will learn to assess the conflict risks and peacebuilding opportunities present in different economic interventions, through conflict
and political economy analysis; to identify different types of economic
actors and their capacities for contributing to peace and conflict; and to
develop practical ideas and strategies for working with them.

Participants will be exposed to case studies and experiences in tackling the economic dimensions of peacebuilding from different regions, focusing on their
relevance for the South Asia context. The course will also draw on relevant
expertise from Sri Lankan experts and practitioners, from government, the
donor community, the private sector and civil society. Finally, participants
will be exposed to concrete initiatives that combine economic and
peacebuilding interventions, through a four-day field visit component.

By the end of the course, participants will have:
-the ability to identify and analyse economic root causes, and legacies, of conflict in their own contexts
-acquired initiative to effectively reach out to and work with different economic actors, especially the private sector, for peacebuilding
-Integrate peacebuilding and socio-economic interventions in their programming and work.
