Intermittent armed conflict has persisted in Colombia for more than 40 years. Currently, the Colombian government is combating three armed movements: two left-wing guerrilla groups—the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and the National Liberation Army (ELN)—and a right-wing paramilitary group, the United Self-Defense of Colombia (AUC). Political, cultural, and sexual violence
have touched all regions of the country.
