Appleton Foundation

Appleton Foundation seeks to strengthen social movements in Latin America that are engaged in the promotion and defense of human rights. Appleton also works to confront the applications of biotechnology which threaten human rights. Examples include: commercial trafficking in women's eggs; exploitative gestational surrogacy businesses in developing countries; the growing databases of DNA taken from indigenous groups and from persons arrested but never convicted of crimes; and the efforts toward the creation of human babies to be cloned or genetically designed to someone else's specifications.

Belgian Peacebuilding Service (Kingdom of Belgium - Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation)

The objective of the Peacebuilding Service is to finance projects concerned with conflict prevention and peacebuilding in accordance with specific thematic and geographical priorities of Belgium’s foreign policy. To attain this goal, the Service has a fixed budget of EU 31.1 million for 2009. Projects financed out of the Preventive Diplomacy budget must focus on preventing or helping to resolve serious conflicts in the short term (generally one year), whereas projects funded out of the Conflict Prevention budget tend to last longer (usually three years) and set out to shore up political, socioeconomic, legal and cultural institutions.

CrossCurrents Foundation

The CrossCurrents Foundation was established in late 2006 to promote social, environmental and economic justice. The work of the Foundation is rooted in the idea that there are times when ordinary people can make significant change if advocates for change have sufficient resources to engage in civic activities. CrossCurrents focuses where it believes private funding can make a strategic difference to public education campaigns about critical issues. Effective and socially relevant public art is part of our overall effort to increase civic participation.

Kvinna Till Kvinna

Kvinna till Kvinna literally means ”Woman to Woman”. Our partner organisations organise meeting points for women in environments where it is difficult for them to connect. They influence policy and generate dialogue across border conflicts. They work to promote women’s health, to provide information and education about women’s human rights, and to prevent human trafficking and violence against women. Our role is to provide financial support and to mediate contacts between organisations.

Peace Development Fund (PDF)

PDF is more than a grantmaker: our model of philanthropy involves direct funding, advocacy where appropriate and partnerships built around mutual respect, sharing of resources, and transparency of planning and decision-making. We endeavor to be a key “go-to” foundation on issues of peace, human rights, social justice and environmental protection. We work to counter-balance dominant power structures by moving resources and sharing decision-making with activist groups and communities.

The Trust Fund for Victims

At the end of one of the bloodiest centuries in human history, the international community made a commitment to end impunity, help prevent the gravest crimes known to humanity and bring justice to victims with the adoption of the Rome Statute. The treaty, voted for by 120 states in 1998, established the International Criminal Court (ICC) to prosecute those responsible for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. In July of 2002, the ICC under the Rome Statute officially came into force and the Trust Fund for Victims was born with the purpose of encouraging restorative justice through the provision of assistance to victims of crimes that fall within the Court's jurisdiction.
