This article by Lisa Webley and Liz Duff considers the theoretical explanations for why women are not remaining and progressing through the ranks of the solicitors' profession in England and Wales and sets out the findings from a Law Society commissioned project to look into reasons why women have a break or leave the profession. It futher looks into whether strategies to empower women solicitors actively work against them and that a wider values based approach to professional identity will meet the criticisms raised by participants in the research.
