Security Council Open Debate on Women, Peace and Security, October 2001

The first Presidential Statement, adopted at the end of the 2001 Open Debate, reaffirmed the Security Council's commitment to increasing women's decision-making role on issues of peace and security, and called on Member States to include women in the negotiation and implementation of peace accords. The Council expressed its concern that there were still no women appointed by the Secretary-General (SG) as special representatives and envoys to peace missions – the highest position in the UN system in a conflict country – and urged Member States to nominate more women candidates for consideration by the Secretary-General.
